I have a problem when the incumbent running for re-election lets me know exactly how I'm going to vote. By my definition that would be a dictatorship. I'm not current on my African history but haven't we heard this rhetoric before? Idi Amin, Samuel Doe, Charles (Dakhpana Ghankay) Taylor, etc. Should we just put a line-up of former tyrants and their rhetoric in our history books, so our children's children will know what not to look for in a leader. I suppose depending on your perspective, one man's tyrant is another man's savior. But just in generally, Africa doesn't need to be exploited by foreign interests, it's leaders are doing a fine job of that all on their own. Not to be misinterpreted, not all African leaders are bad, ie. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, but it only takes one bad apple to spoil it for everyone else.

On the final day of campaigning, President Yahya Jammeh vowed to rule for the next 40 years. Mr. Jammeh, who seized power in 1994 as a 29-year-old army lieutenant and went on to win elections in 1996 and 2001, told supporters that he ruled through God and that “no coup d’état or elections can remove me.’’ He faces two challengers but warned at the rally in Serekunda, east of the capital, Banju, “I will develop the areas that vote for me, but if you don’t vote for me, don’t expect anything.”
